Needs to be updated
Reviewed in the United States on July 21, 2019
I purchased and started reading this, but then realized it was last updated in 2013. Six years is an eternity in this field. It seems like this was a good book when it was released, but I''d rather invest my time into something more up to date. Returned it.

This is a good overview of AWS for people who want to understand what AWS offers -- semi-techies like me. Once it explains the multiple offerings, the book goes into depth about to work with the application programming interface -- the API that one encounters when using AWS. That part is more for techies than for "dummies". The one disappointment is that it doesn''t discuss specific third party applications that can be used by people who prefer not to build their own applications to run on AWS, and who don''t want to go to an outside developer. For example, there must be someone somewhere who offers a canned application for people who want to back up data such as photos or music to S3 or to Glacier. But the only 3rd party software mentioned is Backupify, which handles data you store in the cloud, but mot data on your on-premise servers. (If there isn''t a commercially available backup app that does what services like Carbonite do, there''s a business opportunity for anyone reading this review,)

I had no previous experience with AWS and the information available on amazon was not easy to follow for me since I didn''t had any reference of the different components and their functions and I couldn''t find a reference inside AWS documentation that would exemplefy this in general.

This book helped me to understand the big picture of the services available in AWS and the implication of configuration options of the most commonly used services. I''m sure it will be useful as a reference for a little while, which is basically the function of this type of "basic" guides.

Its honestly a really good book - at first I wasn''t really sold on it - it felt like it was missing details....but then about 1/3 of the way through the book - I realized that was getting a really education on the material.

I was even cross referencing some of the material with the reference documentation on the AWS website and I realized that I was receiving the same material in a much cleaner / clearer fashion.

I should say that this book will not make you an expert - but I think its a great introduction to the material

Good overview for those not really familiar with AWS. I have to support (minimally right now) and it''s just good to get to know the terminology, how it works, network concepts which are different than traditional methods, etc.. The AWS documentation is fine BUT voluminous to say the least and very dry to read. This is a good primer.

Workmanlike but already aging...
Reviewed in the United States on September 1, 2015
Due to the rapid pace of development of AWS it is already out-of-date in parts. Would really appreciate access to updated versions (e.g. web pages offering "addenda") of exercises that are no longer possible due to the way Amazon has changed their offerings.

Generally excellent introduction to the AWS core concepts

Would have gotten 5 starts, but one section (on VPC and subnets) was not clearly explained, the rest were superb

So who is this for? It starts telling you with pictures and text how to register, enter credit card details, and so on. Puhleeez! Then it ''dives into'' setting up AWS storage, going into mind-numbing detail. So it is NOT readable as a book, unless for total coneheads, it is for reference. But seek the webhosting capabilities, and you will really not find: Route 53 does pop up on p193, with some really inside-out explanations of what it is and how it relates to DNS register services, (which includes not-mentioned folks like e.g. GoDaddy). And that''s it. Now if you look at Lynda training on AWS, it goes head-to-head with GoDaddy from the get-go all about how great AWS is in comparison. Who has a better grip on what folks want, I ask? Also, the book is a non-stop pitch for how great AWS is (for large, scalable businesses) but not really much about who might find it irrelevant - like the manager of the average website, frinstance. More case-by-case recipes, please! What if I have a hosted website and want to transition? No clues given here - none. Strange - maybe there really is a book that matches the title, but this ain''t it.
